Library of the Day: Cleveland Heights Lee Road Branch, Reinvented by Studio Techne

I've used the Cleveland Heights library on Lee Road since the 1970s, and can say with confidence the recent Studio Techne reinvention of this facility transformed the space, site, and surrounding neighborhood for the better. Featuring a dramatic, high-art bridge over Lee Road, and two reused buildings - one signficantly modernized - with crisp, fitting site improvements, this is one of the best library facilities and urban redevelopments in Northeast Ohio.

Congratulations to Shaw's 'Best Band In The World'

Submitted by Norm Roulet on July 4, 2008 - 10:06am.

When people wonder what is the value of a local daily newspaper, I must point to the story of Shaw High School Band, which was invited to China to perform but could not afford to do that. The Plain Dealer article "Bang a Drum, Proudly", by Connie Schulz, raised enough attention and funding to get them there, from where they just returned in triumph (nicely covered in the PD here, today)... a $500,000 whirlwind phenomenon all occurring in less than 6 months!

The Big Switch

From the author of The Big Switch, Nicholas Carr:
"The time of Gates and the other great software programmers who wrote the code of the PC age has come to an end.  The future of computing belongs to the new utilitarians."

DANCE VIDEO OF THE DAY - LINEAR MOTOR

Submitted by Jeff Buster on March 4, 2008 - 8:23pm.

Here is a dance video which NEO should watch and understand - and understand how to program.

A dance that union workers, and all workers, need to learn.

PUTITONTHEBALLOT - CUYAHOGA COUNTY - WHERE'S YOUR SALES TAX MONEY NOW?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on December 13, 2007 - 5:41pm.

Cuyahoga County, Ohio, has been collecting a quarter percent more sales and use tax for almost 3 months now - since October 1, 2007.   Projected by Commissioners Tim Hagan and Jimmy Dimora at about one million per week, that extrapolates to about 11 million in the County coffers from the added sales tax.

I accompanied Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed, (center with clip board above) a number of times as he collected signatures in order to allow a County wide referendum vote to determine if the voters would support such a tax.

ROLDO BARTIMOLE ON BREWED FRESH DAILY - POSITIVELY CLEVELAND + PLUS

Submitted by Jeff Buster on December 13, 2007 - 4:06pm.

BREWED FRESH DAILY HAS A THREAD which carries  a discussion which I believe it is important for everyone in NEO to read.  The thread is especially important now that the City of Cleveland is looking desperately for immediate cash-back from the taxpayers’ UDAG loans.

WHY AMTRAK IS NEVER ON TIME – HAVEN’T YOU HEARD ARLO? IT’S INTENTIONAL, STUPID!

Submitted by Jeff Buster on November 23, 2007 - 3:58pm.

CHAPTER ONE Recently, when I spoke with a conductor on the Albany-Boston Amtrak coach, he told me that he had been working on that run for the last four years and the train had NEVER arrived on time.  Consistent with his experience, we arrived an hour late.

Buster Busting down barriers to justice at Justice Center

Submitted by Norm Roulet on November 7, 2007 - 12:42am.

I can understand why Jeff put up the sunny, happy sunflower header, on such a glum day, as I'm sure we'd all love a lift... but the reason we are feeling glum is not the weather or lack of flowers but the injustices we see all around us. My replacement header is not intended to cheer people up but to cheer on injustice-buster Buster in his pursuit of liberty and freedom to take pictures in public places and justice for all.
